Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying such medications must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
