Elon Musk's Artificial Intelligence Chatbot Alters Pictures of Females to Virtually Remove Their Clothes

AI Image Alteration Issue

Elon Musk's social media network X has sparked major anger after people utilized its AI chatbot Grok to alter images of women by taking off their clothing.

Multiple cases have emerged where the technology has been used to virtually strip female subjects to render them in swimwear without consent, as well as to insert them in inappropriate contexts.

Developer Reaction and Legal Stance

XAI, the company behind Grok, remained silent to requests for comment, aside from an auto-reply response stating "traditional news outlets lies".

A Home Office official stated that new laws is being brought forward to outlaw nudification technology. Under a new criminal offence, anyone who provided such technology would "be subject to a prison sentence and heavy penalties".

"X or Grok is capable of halting these forms of misuse if they desired to," said a law professor, adding they "seem to have impunity."

Oversight Body Position and Platform Functionality

The communications watchdog Ofcom said tech firms must "assess the danger" of people viewing illegal content on their networks, but did not confirm whether it was presently investigating X or Grok in regarding artificial intelligence images.

Grok is a free artificial intelligence—with some additional features—which answers X users' queries when they mention it in a message.

It is commonly used to provide commentary or more background to other users' remarks, but people on X are also capable of alter an uploaded picture through its artificial intelligence picture modification feature.

Background of Controversy and Rules

The chatbot has been faulted for enabling users to create pictures and videos with explicit content and sexually suggestive content, and it was earlier accused of making sexually explicit content of public figures.

"X has been enabling the production and spread of these images for a long time without taking any steps and we have yet to see any intervention by regulators," Professor McGlynn added.

XAI's own usage rules bans "showing likenesses of people in a graphic way".

In a statement, Ofcom said it was illegal to "generate or circulate private pictures or child sexual abuse material" and clarified this covered sexual deepfakes made with AI.

It said networks such as X were required to take "necessary actions" to "reduce the risk" of users coming across unlawful content on their platforms and to delete it swiftly when they become aware of it.
